SMILE 13th Science Study Team and Consortium meeting successfully held in Xi’an China
From May 12 to 15, 2019, the 13th Science Study Team (SST) and joint meeting of the Solar Wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) were held in Xi'an, China. The meeting was jointly convened by Chinese Chief Scientist Chi Wang, European Chief Scientist Graziella Branduardi-Raymont of University College London, and Project Scientist Philippe Escoubet of the European Space Agency (ESA). Over 90 people, including science team menbers from the England, America, Canada, Austria, Belgium, ESA and China, as well as the engineering team, payload team, Chinese Control Center, Ground Support System, Science Application System, ESA project team, and European Space Astronomical Center (ESAC), participated in the meeting.
The meeting was chaired by Chinese chief scientist Chi Wang. Secretary-General of China Space Foundation Cheng Wang was invited to give a welcoming speech, and European Chief Scientist Graziella Branduardi-Raymont and project scientist Philippe Escoubet made welcoming speeches. Chi Wang welcomed everyone to the meeting and pointed out that SMILE was progressing smoothly, as it is official approved by ESA and fully entering the stage of Engineering development. Wang also noticed that this was the last meeting of SST, which will be renamed Science Working Team (SWT) to carry out SMILE scientific research activities.
According to the schedule of the meeting, the engineering team and payload team from China and Europe reported their development progress. SST reports their research contents and achievements on SMILE's scientific objectives and related scientific issues, including solar-terrestrial space, magnetosphere, ionosphere and Aurora observation. A splinter meeting is held for the modeling work group.Technical Management Team of China and Europe also held meeting about the technical coordination between systems and product assurance (PA) management coordination, which also achieved a lot of results.
Chief Scientists, Project Scientist, and Payload PIs discussed and agreed on SMILE mission data policy. It is decided the next SWT and Consortium meeting is to be hold in Spain in mid-November 2019.
