1. Science objectives

China plan to launched its first lunar spacecraft by 2007, and it is the first step of China deep space exploration plan. The mission objectives of the lunar exploration are: obtaining the lunar surface three-dimensional stereo image; analyzing the distribution of the useful elements and estimating their abundance; surveying the thickness of lunar soil and evaluating resource of He-3; exploring the environment between the Moon and Earth.

2. Instruments as payloads

To achieve the above mission goals, five kinds of scientific instruments are chosen as the payloads of the lunar satellite. These include stereo camera and Signac-based interferometer spectrometer imager, laser altimeter, microwave radiometer, Gamma and x ray spectrometer system and space environment monitor system. In order to collect, process, store and transmit the scientific data of the payloads a special payload data management system is also included.

Stereo camera and spectrometer imager

The stereo camera can get the nadir, forward, and backward view of the moon.

Laser altimeter system

Laser altimeter system is designed to measure the distance from the spacecraft to the nadir point of the lunar surface.

Gamma and X ray spectrometer system

Gamma and x ray spectrometer system is designed to map the elemental abundances of the lunar crust.

Microwave radiometer

The scientific objectives of this microwave sounder include extracting the information about lunar soil depth by measuring the lunar surface brightness temperature and exploiting the penetrating characteristics of microwave emission from subsurface lunar soil and lunar rocks; and obtaining the microwave remote sensing information about the dark semi-sphere and the polar regions of the moon.

Space environment monitor system

The space environment monitor system includes one solar high-energy particle detector and two solar wind ion detectors.

Payload data management system

PDMS is a distributed system based on the 1553B data bus, it consists of Bus Controller(BC), Solid State Recorder(SSR), High Rate Multiplexer(HRM), Remote Terminal(RT) and Payload Power Distributor(PPD).
