On 23 Nov. 2022, the session on Prospects and challenges in space science in the framework of United Nations/China 2nd Global Partnership Workshop on Space Exploration and Innovation was successfully held in Haikou China, which is organized by United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and China National Space Administration (CNSA) and hosted by National Space Science Center (NSSC), Chinese Academy of Sciences. Prof. Chi Wang, Director General of NSSC, chaired the hybrid meeting.

In the opening remarks, Prof. Chi Wang stressed that "Space science is a frontier discipline to explore the universe and the laws of nature. Since the beginning of the 21st century, there has been a significant increase in the number of Nobel Prize-level achievements from the implemented space science missions, including but not limited to X-ray astronomy, cosmic microwave background radiation, accelerated expansion of the universe, theoretical discoveries in cosmology, exoplanets, black hole formation". He pointed out that "the United Nations/China workshop provides a nice opportunity for major players in space science to discuss the prospects and challenges‘’.

The session invites speakers from prestigious international organizations, major space agencies and space science institutions, such as Committee on Space Research (COSPAR), European Space Agency (ESA), Space Research Institute (IKI) of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE), Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO), Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), National Space Science Center (NSSC) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and China Academy of Space Technology (CAST).

The 9 invited talks touch upon the prospects and challenges in space science. Prof. Gunther HASINGER, Science Director of ESA, Prof. Anatoli PETRUKOVICH, Director of IKI, Clezio de NARDIN, Director of INPE, and Prof. Chi Wang touches upon the space science program and planning in Europe, Russia, Brazil and China respectively. Prof. Pascale EHRENFREUND, President of COSPAR, Prof. Ferhat OZEREN, Deputy Secretary General of APSCO, and Prof. Fabio FAVATA, coordinator of science program at ESA, elaborated on the international cooperation practice at COSPAR, APSCO and ESA respectively. Prof. Alessandro BARTOLONI from INFN and Mr Hui Du from CAST introduced their respective science projects and mission concept.

The session entitled Prospects and challenges in space science is an integral part of United Nations/China 2nd Global Partnership Workshop on Space Exploration and Innovation, which aims to promote exchanges and dialogues between among space science players across the globe.
