In the organization reform carried out by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), to establish so-called Center for Innovative Academy (or institute) is a key action in the implementation plan. The article starts from the history of the motivations to establish CAS’s institutes in the 50’s-60’s, and followed by an analysis of the evolution of those institute. The current problems that these institutes are facing are also addressed together with new national demands. Discussions are carried out then on how to solve those problems and improve the performance of the institutes with the new reform by establishing the so-called Center of Innovative Academy.
