“Jointly established by CAS and INPE, the China-Brazil Joint Laboratory for space weather is another remarkable example of Sino-Brazil cooperation, or in a broader picture, the cooperation between developing countries in the field of space science. The newly established Lab. as another insightful endeavor after the China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite Program (CBERS) will not only push forward the cooperation between China and Brazil in the field of space science, but also by recognizing it as the joint training base for outstanding young scientists, further promote the science and technology as well as the cultural exchange between two nations” CAS Vice President YIN Hejun said at the ceremony.

After the inauguration ceremony, a meeting was held to discuss further cooperative issues. Yin Hejun and Dr. Perondi discussed in detail the CAS-INPE further cooperation on space exploration, meteorological science, and remote sensing, etc. The CAS delegation also visited the satellite assembly plant (LIT) at INPE research parks.

The China-Brazil Joint laboratory for Space Weather, as part of the International Space Weather Meridian Circle Program, is expected to become fully operational in 2016. And essential facilities such as the South America Data Center, Santa Maritafield Stations will be established in the first phase of the preparation work. Monitoring equipments such as the layout LIDAR, digital altimeter, ionospheric GPS-TEC and fluxgate magnetometer will also be put into application soon.

Established at the Department of Space Weather, INPE, the Lab. will realize the joint ground-based space weather monitoring of the conjugate region in both northern and southern hemisphere; and will be helpful to the further understanding of regional characteristic of space weather and its global change mechanism.
